We gather because trans people’s existence is under attack. Across the country, bills are being introduced and debated that would dangerously recast trans people as threats, labeling them with terms like “domestic terrorists,” “violent extremists,” and “nihilistic extremists.” These proposals don’t come from nowhere: they are part of a broader campaign to criminalize dissent, silence their voices, and strip away their rights under the guise of national security.
Some of the most alarming proposals include:
• Efforts, pushed by groups tied to Project 2025 and conservative think tanks, to have the FBI adopt a classification called “Transgender Ideology-Inspired Violent Extremism (TIVE)” or to label trans people as part of a “nihilistic violent extremist” threat group.
• Warnings from national voices about redefining “terrorism” or “extremism” to include speech or organizing around trans rights.
• A disturbing trend of anti-trans bills across states that frame our lives as dangerous or destabilizing, legislation banning gender-affirming care, restricting bathroom and public space access, or making everyday life a legal liability.
These proposals are not theoretical, they are harmful. The fact is:
• There is no credible evidence that trans people commit violence at disproportionate rates.
• In fact, trans folks are more often targets of violence, discrimination, and erasure.
• Treating activism, speech, protest, organizing, as terrorism is a direct assault on our First Amendment rights.
